CycloClimbing OCD - English Lake District Claims

Many of the roads can be unpleasantly busy in the summer holiday period.

u - unclassified; r/s - roughstuff; a - approximate (heights)

105. Birker Fell u S.E. of Eskdale 271m SD-17.97. Good views on a quiet and narrow road.

110.Dunmail Rise A591 South of Keswick 238m NY-33.11. Steady climbs on a busy main road. The west side of Thirlmere is strongly recommended for the northern side of this route. There are two youth hostels at Grasmere.

115. Hardknott u Eskdale to Ambleside 394m NY-23.01. Very steep both sides (up to 33%). You may well find it safer to walk down part of the west side in less than ideal conditions! The remains of the Roman fort on the west side are worth a look.

120. High Row u S then W from Troutbeck 408m NY-38.21. Quiet with a poor road surface (1981).

120a. Old Coach Road r/s E. of Keswick 437m NY-36.22. Highly recommended.

120b. Matterdale Comm A5091 S. of Troutbeck 343m NY-38.24. Quiet and, on the north side at least, quite easy. It is simply a bump on the way to High Row if that is your route.

125. High Street r/s Ullswater to Kirkstone 823m NY-43.11. See Paul Harrison's article in Mag.29 (reported as rideable - for the strong and reckless!) and notes in Mag.25 by Andy Hunt (very boggy route) to get two strongly contrasting views of what this route can be like.

130. Honister B5289 S.E. of Buttermere 358m NY-22.13. Steep, especially on the Buttermere side, but the sign encouraging cyclists to walk down is not necessary for the experienced in reasonable conditions. Narrow with excellent views. Good youth hostel at summit.

135. Kirkstone A592/u N.E. of Ambleside 454m NY-40.08. Three-sided pass. Hard climbs (up to 20%) especially on the direct route up from Ambleside. There is a pub and cafe at the summit but one report says that it is expensive and unfriendly (1990). This is the highest of the surfaced roads in the Lake District.

145. Newlands Hause u S.W. of Keswick 334m NY-19.17. Quiet and narrow. The last part of the Buttermere to Keswick climb is steep but you then have a long descent to Keswick.

155. Red Bank u S. of Grasmere 159m NY-34.05.

160. Shap A6 Penrith to Kendal 426m NY-55.06. (Deemings Moss) Often fairly quiet thanks to the M6 nearby. A bleak area with long and steady climbs.

163. Skiddaw Hause r/s Keswick to Bassenthwaite 470m NY-28.30. Roughstuff which is only partly rideable.

165. Stickle u S.E. of Ulpha 259m SD-21.93.

170. Stoneside/Thwaites Fell u S.W. of Ulpha 396m SD-14.89. An easy and quiet climb over the moors - more like the Pennines than the Lakes.

175. Wall End/Langdale B5343/u S.W. of Grasmere 220m NY-28.05. Short and steep with beautiful views.

180. Whinlatter B5292 W. of Keswick 318m NY-20.24. Easy climb through woods from Keswick. Surprisingly quiet for a 'B' road.

185. Wilton Fell u N. of Eskdale 289m NY-07.13. Quiet and narrow.

190. Wrynose u Eskdale to Ambleside 390m NY-27.02. Very steep (up to 25%) and quite narrow on both sides. Good views both ways. Wild camping is possible on the west side. It is slightly less hard from the west.
